The Friends of Nevada State Museum is recruiting new volunteers to serve in a variety of activities at the Museum. Volunteers work with staff on special events, docent tours, materials, and related activities. Volunteers learn about a wide variety of topics — from baskets to butterflies.

A two-day, no-cost volunteer training is scheduled for Monday and Tuesday, April 8-9, 2024, 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Registration for the training is required to prepare volunteers for assignments. To sign up, call 775-687-0653 or email [email protected].

The benefits of volunteering are enriching, fulfilling, and fun:

  • Share Nevada’s unique and exciting history with worldwide visitors
  • Mentoring opportunities with current guides for the Museum and State Capitol
  • Exceptional Museum Staff share inside information on exhibits, lectures, construction projects, and more
  • Learn about other Museum opportunities to understand, preserve and celebrate Nevada’s natural and cultural history

Friends of the Nevada State Museum are recruiting members to serve in a variety of volunteer capacities to match the growth of the museum’s educational programs and tours. In addition to conducting tours of the permanent and changing Museum exhibits, volunteers enhance children’s learning opportunities with a variety of nature programs utilizing the Museum’s Discovery Lab and classroom. Engaging programs include: Nevada’s Wildflowers, Fun with Fossils, Desert Adaptation, Fun with Butterflies, Funky Fungi, and Pines are Fine.

Volunteers also share the rich history of the State Capitol with visitors to Carson City. Tours provide guests with information on the Nevada Lincoln portrait, the unique State Library octagon, and the first Legislative chambers which housed the Nevada Assembly and State Senate.

In addition to partnering with the Museum to fulfill its mission, volunteers also receive an enriching learning experience. Several experts provide training on all aspects of Nevada history, American Indian culture, and natural history. Mentoring opportunities with current guides further enhance volunteers’ skills with contextual information and stories. The Museum’s exceptional professional staff works closely with the Friends members to share inside information on Museum exhibits, lectures, construction projects, and other developments.

Residents of northern Nevada interested in learning more about these opportunities should contact the Nevada State Museum’s Education office at 775-687-0653, or [email protected].
